Sending surveys to your contacts is an efficient way to get to know them better. What do they like? What do they think you can do better?
Knowing what your customers think of you might help you keep the relationship going and the customers active over time.
You can send surveys by email or SMS messages in Engage, just create a survey and paste the survey link in the message.
How to use a Survey from Survey Monkey in your send-outs
- Create and open your survey.
- Go to the Collect Responses tab of your survey.
- Choose Send survey your way and then choose Share a survey link.
- If needed change options for the collector.
- Click copy and paste the URL into a Engage message as a link.
If you would like to create more collector links for the same survey, just head over to the Collect Responses tab and choose Add new collector and click Web link collector.

Note: All contacts will receive the same link and Survey Monkey will keep track of the responses. You will not be able to connect specific answers with unique contacts.
How to send Engage contact data as part of a response
You might want to include Engage contact data, such as age and city, as part of the response to be able to filter Survey Monkey reports by contact data.
Survey Monkey can receive contact data included in the survey web link by adding Custom variables, using Engage’s personalized fields.
Note: If you are not able to follow bellow steps you may need to upgrade your Survey Monkey license to another plan to gain access to custom variables.
How to add Custom variables in Survey Monkey
- Open your survey.
- Click the Design Survey tab.
- In the left sidebar, click the Logic tab.
- Click Custom Variables.
- Update existing variable, chose a Variable name and a Label (Example variable A and label Age).
- Click Save.
- If you would like to add more variables click on New custom variable (Example variable B and label city).
It is important to know that the contacts will be able to see the variable names and their values as part of the URL in the browser when answering the survey.
Survey Monkey allows a maximum of 100 variables and 2,000 characters for links, read more about limitations here.
How to replace variable values with personalized fields from Engage
When done adding custom variables follow the next steps to add Engage personalized fields in the URL.
- Click the Collect Responses tab.
- Choose Send survey your way and then choose Share a survey link.
- Copy the survey link in the above example, we added the variables A for age and B for city.
The survey link will look something like this:
https://sv.surveymonkey.com/r/xxxxxx?A=[A_value]&B=[B_value] - Edit your URL and replace Custom variable values ([A_value] and [B_value]) with Engage personalized fields.
We used [[age]] and [[city]], and it looks something like this:
https://sv.surveymonkey.com/r/xxxxxx?A=[[age]]&B=[[city]] - Add the updated URL into a Engage message. Before sending the survey to your contacts, send a test message to make sure the custom variables and personalized fields worked as intended.
Engage uses double square brackets for the personalization fields. You'll find a list of available personalized fields to work with in Engage here.
Note: If you add more custom variables later you will need to create a new weblink.
Analyzing your responses
When analyzing your survey results, custom variables will be included when exporting the responses and can be used for filtering in Survey Monkey and in the CSV report you download from Survey Monkey.
